Background

Sabrina was born in the rural areas of Knox, where her family owned a moderately-sized farm that historically grew tobacco, once a staple of Kentucky farming, but had, in her lifetime, switched to growing grains such as corn and soybeans. The farm by no means did well, but also wasn't declining. Her parents managed to keep income stable, and so Sabrina enjoyed a humble education, which was common for lower-middle class people like her, but mostly her time was devoted to working on the farm. Because of this, Sabrina earned a lot of experience that someone working as a general farmhand would. She learned machinery operation and repair, crop management, livestock handling, and general physical labor like building maintenance, fence repairs, or hauling goods by hand. She also made a hobby of nocturnal farm activities, like following her father out to the fields with a rifle and hunting pests. She knew her way around a rifle and shotgun because of this. Her rural living meant that Sabrina wasn't really aware of all the chatter online, or even the news reports about strange phenomenon going on across the US. She remained oblivious to it, mostly shrugging off any strange experiences she had, as it wasn't unusual to hear bumps in the night in a farmhouse. It was late when she became aware, when happening to catch an airing of Unsolved Mysteries. Sabrina didn't think much of it at the time, only shook her head and probably made some comment about "city-folk", but for the next few months the strange things happening around her would become more frequent. She never overreacted to them, usually finding a way to shrug it away, but was reminded of that episode she watched that night every time. She never knew exactly what was going on. That was until March 9th, 1993. While in the basement, fetching canned food for supper preparation, loud pounding made her feel intense vibrations, which then made her feel light-headed. Sabrina fell off a step-stool, spilling cans she held all over the floor, and laid among those cans for a while, though wasn't sure for how long. She only knew that she woke up some time later, and, when emerging from the basement, saw strange rifts opening and closing across their farmland. Being too scared to go outside, Sabrina sat in the basement, feeling there was a reason her father and mother, who were on the porch, were missing, and her, who was in the basement, was not missing. She felt safe in there, so she survived there for a few days. On March 15th, a final rift tore across the family barn, poured some undead, then closed. Another rift happened close by and did the same, then another, until the house was surrounded by undead. No more rifts opened. It wasn't a terribly large event, but it was enough to overwhelm one person when the undead gained an interest in getting into the house and began breaking windows, banging on doors, and doing whatever they could to get in. Sabrina managed to take a few out with her father's shotgun, but ultimately decided to run to the family truck and flee the farm. The woman spent one night driving without sleep until she heard about the emergency shelter in Louisville MegaCavern MegaMall. With no where else to go, she decided to seek shelter there.
