Background
Violet Neher’s childhood, was anything but typical the eldest child but her parents barely payed her mind the moment her darling sister was born without a voice, she had tried to be a good older sister even learning ASL so they could better communicate but every single accident began to become her doing, nothing her sister did could be her fault, and it all fell on Violet, every mistake, every bad thing that happened to her sister, was all her fault.
After years of this treatment she had given up on being the good older sister and instead became the rebel her parents projected her to be, at first just causing trouble at her school, graffitiing desks and class rooms, to ditching classes to sneaking out and stealing things from the teachers lounge, and her antics only got worse as the years went on, from school to the public getting in trouble for breaking and entering, loitering with stolen alcohol and cigarettes and vandalism, but one place in particular was her favorite to loiter in, a local scrapyard, away from the hustle of the local town, and hidden enough away for Violet to hide from the law in the hectic nights, the only bit of quiet she could get.
On one fateful night, one that felt like any of the others, running away from her troubles at home, she found herself using her fathers old beaten leather jacket she had stolen using it to hop over the barbwire fence of the scrapyard, she had made herself comfortable on top a car hood lighting up a cigarette and looking out to the stars, when a bright light blinded her, it was the owner, she had been caught many times before by others but at this point she was tired of the chase, and just waited to get the police called on her.
But this time was different, there was no yelling, no flashing red and blue lights, just a small breakroom and a cup of tea, it was something new to her, the owner wasn't even mad more saddened, instead of the usual investigation he gave Violet an offer, work, a pay, and a place to hide away from without worrying about her parents or the law, in return, the owner, for peace of mind, would make sure that Violet learns about anything that could possibly kill her in the yard if played around with.
She had taken him up on his offer, it was an adjustment for her having a place that even though was cold and sharp, felt more safe than she had in her own home, the owner even gave her the nickname Bubblegum because of the way she had stuck to the place like gum under your boot, terribly hard to get rid of, years had flown by, and by the end of it she almost seemed like a different person, making friends with her coworkers and no longer running from her troubles.
On a day like any other, they had gotten a new car that seemed mostly intact, one of the workers was seeing if he could get it up and running again, he’d call for Violet to see if she could notice anything under the hood while it was running, when the engine started there was a clicking sound followed by a low hiss, she’d listen closely to try and find where that hissing was coming from, and she’d learn quick when a gasket burst, spraying hot oil all across her face, the pain was instant, she could feel as the oil burned into her very skull, She was quickly rushed to the hospital.
After a year of healing her doctors had recommended her to visit Knox to see a doctor who had dealt with burns of her nature before, she began her travel up north but on her way got stuck in a shelter hiding from the rifts and the monsters that came with them, but with her eye drops running dry and her eye only getting worse, she finally made a plan to leave the underground shelter in hopes of finding a doctor and surviving this madness.
