Whether it be achievements or a whole story composed of his bullshits that only paint himself in a good light. Though, in terms of morality. He is naturally a good person, and sometimes overly generous due to his rich background.
In term of how he deals with violence, he tends to avoid conflict. But it is easy to piss him off by targeting his insecurities.
Appearance
He have messy hairs and beard, a beer belly, and is burly with fats mostly covering his muscles. His natural eyes and hairs are black, but he loves to dye his hairs and beard on a whim. He is also wearing a bunch of tattoos that are done by the best tattoo artists his family could get him.
He often wears Hawaiian shirts and a bucket hat with a light-blue color. One might also assume that his sunglass is glued to his face as he wouldn't take it off even when he needs clear vision.
Background
Before the apocalypse.
Jay is an incompetent snob who relied on his family's wealth. He has no real jobs, successful marriages, nor any true friends. The only thing he has is his many yachts, divorces, and lies about his fishing achievements.
Spoiled, he is born in the wealthy Thorne family in Florida, Miami. Jay has everything handed to him. All the way from his childhood and adulthood, he is spoiled with expensive toys, fishing gears, and way too many yachts that he doesn't even know how to operate. They're only for show and boasting.
Incompetent, Jay is a failure in every aspect. He performed poorly in school, never lasted more than a week in a job, had a total of five divorces with different women. Severe addiction to alcohol and tobacco. This is only highlighted in contrast with his brother, who is a renowned doctor. Despite his ineptitude, his father and mother still loved him more than the other son who is clearly better. Which obviously led to some disdains from his brother.
A sandcastle built with lies, is the best metaphor to describe his entire life. He boasts himself to be an expert in fishing, how he earned his comfortable lifestyle with hard works. And have told various lies such as winning a fight with an alligator. Though, in reality. Fishing is nothing but a hobby for him, he is only exploiting innocent fishes for fame and recognition among his so-called friends.

2000 to 2005. Jay and his brother survived together in the Florida community there were born in, even if they aren't on good terms with each other. They're still brothers in the end. They're peaceful, Jay tries his best to procure provision for the Florida communities that remained. His brother being one of the doctors of the community. Though, in a series of events. His brother would be announced dead on the 10th of December 2005. He was told that his brother was killed by "Mississippi Marauders" while he was trading a gift for Jay's birthday that's in four days.
2005 to 2010. With his brother gone, Jay is left to be known as the lonely fisherman of the Florida communities. There are no one left to care for him, no one left to believe his grandiose lies. He lives the rest of his life next to the river until the year 2010. Avoiding all kind of conflicts.
2011. The rising conflicts from the Mississippi Marauders and the inherent weirdness of Florida eventually got to him, he decided to quit his monotonous life of a hermit and goes on an expedition to Knox Country. Hoping for the best...
